Zen Week

For Europeans, the concept of Zen is often synonymous with calm and serenity. In order to present this culture in its various guises, a week of Zen culture will take place through the cooperation of The Joint Council for Rinzai and Obaku Zen/The Institute for Zen Studies. The idea is to provide the public with a direct and authentic experience of the spirit of Zen, enabling them to deepen their knowledge of this philosophy central to many aspects of Japanese culture, such as the tea ceremony, ikebana floral arrangements or theater.
The week will include, among others, introductory encounters with Zen meditation or shazengo (brush copies of Zen aphorisms), photography exhibitions and videos relating to the ascetic training of Zen monks, or the essential arts that form this culture: calligraphy, gardens, the tea ceremony, etc.
The highlight of the week is Learning from a Rôshi, a talk by Nanrei Yokota, temple superior of Engaku-ji, Grand Master of Zen Buddhism, on Sunday 7 October at 3pm in Théâtre de la Ville – Espace Cardin.
A part of the events will also take place in the Lyon region.
