Contemporary Theater Series: “Throw away Your Books, Let’s Get onto the Streets” directed by Takahiro Fujita
Takahiro Fujita, a young theater prodigy, will direct the Mum and Gypsy theater company in an early masterpiece by Shuji Terayama who was renowned as “an alchemist of language.”
”Sho O Suteyo, Machi E Deyo” is an early masterpiece by legendary avant-garde director Shuji Terayama, who passed away 35 years ago. This youthful and lyrical title is very famous, but his collection of reviews (1967), play (1968) and film (1971) of the same title all have different content.
Takahiro Fujita launched the “Mum and Gypsy” theater company in 2007, received the 2012 Kishida Prize for Drama at the young age of 26, and has been flourishing as a director in the world of theater. In 2015, he directed a new piece dedicated to Terayama by combining Terayama’s reviews, play and film while using the film version as the focal point and incorporating a character resembling Terayama into the story. Remaining true to Terayama’s own style and pieces, this play is inscribed with the beauty and ugliness of ephemeral youth.
