Contemporary Theater Series: “PROUD SON” directed by Shu Matsui
The European premiere of “PROUD SON ,” a play by Matsui which stimulates all of the five senses, will be staged at Festival d’Automne à Paris. Witness Matsui’s masterful assimilation of texts and images on stage!
Tadashi, a bachelor in his 40s without a stable job, creates an independent country in a room of his apartment for which he relies on his mother’s pension to cover the rent. Hoping to defect from Japan, Tadashi’s mother and a brother and sister visit Tadashi’s country, following a man calling himself “Guide”. Tadashi has a neighbor who listens to noisy music while doing her laundry, and the two begin a bizarre relationship of coexistence while asserting their respective territories. The piece features the parent-child relationship unique to Japan and the solitude of the characters, and was awarded the 2011 Kishida Prize for Drama.
Shu Matsui (1972-) is a playwright and Director who launched his own theater company, Sample, in 2007. His style of seamlessly piecing together fragments of a vulgar yet mysterious world has received widespread acclaim across generations. He will make his European debut with this play.
