Niwa Gekidan Penino led by Kuro Tanino’s first performance in Paris was in 2016. In response to great demand by enthusiastic Parisian fans, the theater company returns to present two plays at Festival d’Automne à Paris!
“The Dark Master”
Kitchen Nagashima in Osaka is a small restaurant run solely by a master chef (master). One day a young man comes to the restaurant for a meal. The chef suggests the young man replace him as the restaurant’s chef. The young man is not an experienced cook, but the master assures the man that he will teach him how to cook using a wireless system. The young man has no place to go, so he accepts this suggestion but…
“Avidya – The Ignorance Inn”
The story is set at an old hot spring inn deep in the mountains. One day, as the season is passing from autumn to winter, an eccentric father and son from Tokyo arrive at the inn. They are puppeteers who have been invited by the innkeeper to perform. The unexpected visit by the eccentric pair baffles villagers but also piques their curiosity. The play depicts the villagers being jolted into a psychological abyss to eventually reveal their dark side. It won the 2016 Kishida Prize for Drama.
