【TANDEM PARIS – TOKYO】 FUROSHIKI PARIS

Under the art direction of architect Tsuyoshi Tane, a pavilion in the image of a huge furoshiki-wrapped object—a gift from Tokyo to Paris—will be set up in front of Hôtel de Ville de Paris. Inside will be various furoshiki-related exhibits and other displays including a video projection of how the furoshiki has been used up to the present day. The theme of the exhibition will be “art of furoshiki.” Other than viewing the display of furoshiki designed for this exhibit by Japanese and French artists and designers, visitors can also try their hand at wrapping furoshiki.

The traditional way of using furoshiki consists of wrapping a square piece of cloth around an object to carry it. The use of furoshiki in Japan dates back to the 8th century (Nara period), and over the years, it has become a part of the daily lives of the Japanese. Said to be the world’s first eco-bag, this exhibition held in Paris will showcase to the world the traditional technique of furoshiki and its cultural, environmental and aesthetic features.

Furoshiki workshops will be held at the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris on November 2, 10, 17, and 24. Visit www.mcjp.fr for details.
